| A Position Paper From SAK International |
|
SAK International is a worldwide organisation of like-minded people seeking the end to corruption and injustice the world over. We do not have the money or resources of the better-known organizations such as Green Peace or Amnesty International but we are just as committed to our cause. SAK International was formed as a direct result of the death by mob of an incorruptible Nigerian, Mr. S. A. K. Metseagharun of the Ugborodo people of the Niger delta area of Nigeria. One may ask who on earth are the people of Ugborodo and why anyone should care until one hears that they are the resident people of an area of Nigeria rich in oil and exploited with zealous fervour by multi-national companies whose only presence in Nigeria is to suck the lifeblood of the land and by extension, of the people, to the last drop, not unlike the proverbial vampire of lore. The story of Mr. Metseagharun's demise at the hands of thugs is one replete with heartbreak, untruths, shameless corruption and exploitation and murder most foul and in broad strokes involves the utter refusal by Mr. Metseagharun to collude with others to join the bandwagon of thieves and steal from his people. He paid dearly for that refusal. It is a story, alas, that is repeated almost verbatim the world over. Suffice it to say, this was the straw that broke the camel's back. This contemptible act has spurred us to act in direct opposition to the unbridled corruption that we see running rampant in Nigeria and many other parts of the world. Places where, ironically, the people and their land can ill afford the choking presence of exploitation and corruption. A little background is in order: every year, with depressing consistency, Nigeria is declared one of the most corrupt countries in the world. A nation into which billions of dollars of oil money flow, Nigeria's per capita income has plummeted during the past two decades, while the bulk of the money has been stolen by elites. Nigeria's leaders have tended to elect themselves, by bullet and not ballot, with military coup following military coup. Nigerian history has witnessed the struggle of the Ogoni people of the Niger delta against the government and multinational oil corporations that climaxed in the well-publicised hanging of their champion, prominent author Ken Saro Wiwa. Blow after devastating blow has been absorbed by the people and still they rise, like bloody boxers from the ring floor, only to be beaten down once again by their own government and by the derelict and callous actions of the mega-corporations. Vast regions of the only economically viable areas of Nigeria are subject to massive ecological abuse, all in the name of oil exploration and mining and under the approving eye of non-representative "public" officials. These are the circumstances
that gave birth to our organization, one that we hope, will change the
world one person at a time. One that we hope, you can join us in propagating. Frederic Woodbridge
